IHS Boys Hoop- Wins States !
Immaculate boys win Class S state basketball titleThe Mustangs didn’t put the Blue Devils completely to bed until the final minute or two, but they also refused to relinquish the lead after the first quarter, despite a few runs by Coginchaug. Up by three in the fourth, Immaculate scored 14 of the final 21 points to earn the state title (the program’s first since 2012) with a tough 53-43 victory. Up 39-36 late in the fourth, Smith drove the lane and floated his shot into the bucket for the five-point lead. With a seven-point lead and two minutes to play, Smith went 1-for-2 from the stripe and Hatcher notched a put-back when Smith missed his second shot, giving Immaculate a 10-point lead and all but clinching the game. Immaculate also closed the first and second quarters with authority, wrapping them up with runs of 5-0 and 7-0 to take leads of 10-9 and 27-18, respectively. Smith was responsible for four of the final five points in the first stanza and also scored the last four of the second, and his layup at the end of the opening quarter gave the Mustangs a 10-9 lead and put them on top for good. With five seconds remaining before halftime, Smith drove hard to the basket for a layup to give the Mustangs their biggest lead of the evening thus far at 27-18. After delivering his postgame speech to the team and allowing all four seniors to say a few words, Mingachos took a moment to reflect back to the very beginning of the season.
